VALDIVIA COURTHOUSE OF APPEALS Location: Calle Yungay esquina San Carlos. Valdivia, Chile Architect: Enrique Browne Associated Architects: Claudio Campos y Patricio Sancha Collaborators Architects: Claudio Peña, María Inés Buzzoni, Pablo Domeyko y Verónica Celedón Structural Engineering: Vogel, Mujica y Breschi Ingenieros Site surface: 966 sqm. Constructed surface: 3.200 sqm. Photography Credits: Guy Wenborne, Enrique Browne Date: 1997 Valdivia, a city 800 Km. south of Santiago de Chile, is surrounded by forests and has a beautiful river that runs through it. The site for the Court of Appeals is near the main square and on the side of the river waterfront. The project divides the site in three parallel areas: A) A triangular elevated plaza that opens towards the river. B) An inverted triangle that contains the 3 floors Public Hall. Its main entrance is on the east, but, due to the natural slope, it has also an access on the west, a store lower, close to the river. This hall is glazed, revealing the transparence of justice. C) A work spaces stripe, to the south of the building, with the Rooms of Audience etc. This area has an independent access. Continuing the norms that govern the sector of the "Typical Zone", the building has inclined roofs with large wingers for the rain. The building gets narrow in its west facade to assimilate its scale with other buildings of the "Typical Zone". In the interiors dominates the wood. On the outside were used coverings that require scarce conservation. Granite and marble in the lower levels and crystal further up.
