REFUGE IN THE SAN PABLO LAKE Location: San Pablo Lake, Ecuador Architect: Enrique Browne Construction Area: 50 m2 Year: 1976 This project was developed quickly for an Ecuadorian client, who had property in the San Pablo Lake. He only wanted a refuge where his family could sleep and where he could store the sports equipment during the off-season. The characteristics of the site and the program where verbally communicated. The size and costs must be minimal. In the future, a larger house would be developed, keeping the first one for the sons or as a boat house. The daily activities at the site are mainly outdoors, like water sports (sailing, windsurf, water-ski and others) and the beach life. The project consisted in a patio in local stone. Such patio is level, with part of it incrusted in the slope that falls towards the lake, creating a half covered by earth and another uncovered. The green cover improves the insulation and mimics the intervention with the surrounding. The uncovered zone has fences that open towards the lake. The walls, interrupted by this extension, frame the views and resemble arms that protect the refuge. The covered area has a large window to the patio. It also has clerestories with perimeter light from above. The interior is one space that serves as dining, living and bedroom. The parent’s sleeping area is separated with curtains. The beds can be used as sofas during the day. A red wall isolates the bathroom and kitchen, continuing towards the uncovered patio to create a service yard.
