SUECIA STREET BUILDING Location: North - West and North East corners of Av. Nueva Providencia and Suecia Street. Providencia, Santiago of Chile Architects: Enrique Browne, Patricio Wenborne and Eduardo San Martín Collaborators: Laura Garrido and Bernardo Urquieta Plot Area: 1.557 sq. mt. Built Area: 9.900 sq. mt. Year: 1979 The clients had two lots available in the corners of Suecia and Nueva Providencia streets. The new Metro passes by this avenue which had an uncertain structure. It was possible to unite the two terrains subterraneously, and at the same time, to join both with the Metro. The owners posed it were feasible to obtain air rights in order to connect the two lots. The program contemplated commercial stores. A large building was projected which would unite the lots subterraneously and aerially, helping to shape the avenue. At the same time, the building connects at both levels with the neighboring buildings in order to form a continuous pedestrian walkway scheme. The stores on the eastern lot were developed on the basis of a spiral of circulation with panoramic elevator. Given the reduced size of the western lot, stores in different levels united by an escalator were designed. In both zones, a large glass surface was utilized like a bow window facing the avenue on the south side (without sun), exhibiting the internal activity to the Avenue. Both zones have interior gardens with trees and plants. The unitary but varied treatment of the system of circulation has a more symbolic expression in the aerial bridge which crosses Suecia Street. A restaurant-lookout was installed there.
