REWARD MENTION: NATIONAL CONTEST FOR ECONOMICAL HOUSES (“ASOCIACIÓN AHORRO Y PRESTAMO DIEGO PORTALES”). VALPARAISO, CHILE (1975). Destiny: Family houses Architects: Enrique Browne Jaime Bellalta Collaborator Architects: Rodberto Fernández Vicente Rodriguez Location: Valparaiso The cluster is located on an inclined lot in the port of Valparaiso. The sites are 9 by 25 meters. The units are paired off by both sides forming a continuous but variable systems of houses with an east-west orientation. The system of houses crosses the site giving rise to an architecture of patios. The principal patio is at the rear and the main bedroom and living room-dining room face onto it. A “parrón” limits the boundary of the lot at the rear. Towards the front, the children´s patio and the service patio are located. The entrance to the house is between these patios. The walls of the patios form the streets with openings for parking spaces. The house is structured with masonry in the form of a double “T”, every three meters. The modules are covered by a wooden shed with a vaulted ceiling of pressed wood. The roof of the shed accommodates the houses on a slope, giving light and wood. The bathrooms and kitchen are concentrated at the wall dividing the adjacent units. The units are highly flexible given that the divisions consist of door-windows and moveable closets. The houses expand by modules up to the point of a four bedroom unit.
