HOUSE IN ZAPALLAR I Principal Architects: Enrique Browne Assistant Architects: Bernardo Onfray, Jorge Campos, Enrique Merino and Veronica Celedón Photographer : Guy Wenborne and Enrique Browne Plot area: 900 sq. mt. Model : Verónica Celedón Total floor area: 80 sq. mt Date: 1984 This summer house for a couple without children occupies a lot of land in front of a two-story house. It was a condition for the sale that the new house should not obstruct the views of the sea. It was decided to submerge the new residence at the edge of a rocky cliff. The roof is a continuation of the garden above. The house occupies the whole front of the terrain, with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. One descends to a small English patio. The service area is attached to the interior side, freeing the western edge for living room and bedrooms. Two beds used as sofas in the living room can be separated by curtains to accommodate guests. The second bedroom also serves as accommodations or as an office for the owner of the house. The living room and bedrooms overlook a terrace with a lawn, covered by a blind which protects from the western sun. This blind goes around the superior axis and serves to protect the house when it is empty. From the terrace, one can descend to a pool formed on the rocks, or directly to the sea. The pillars which virtually delimit the terraces are of stone, the same as stairs, pool and other external elements, so to mimic the house as part of the immediate scenery.
